Holistic practices incorporate the whole person: their body, but also their mind and spirit to attain optimal health and wellness. Holistic health practices often include a combination of conventional and alternative therapies, focusing on prevention, lifestyle changes, and self-care to support health and healing.
Where a doctor's office might just look at the symptoms and prescribe accordingly, a holistic practitioner will look at other variables like lifestyle, stressers and diet/nutrition.
As a firm believer in holistic health, I see how the mind can influence the body in wellness or sickness. If a person has a lot of self-care tools to rely on, they will be in better shape than someone who is being overprescribed antibiotics, for example. Knowing more about what antibiotics do to gut health would allow a individual to know how important probiotics are afterwards. Since stress plays such a big role in overall health, having knowledge of breathwork and other calming techniques can be very beneficial as a long-term plan to manage stress, since it is an inevitable part of our lives.
International Holistic Health Day aims to encourage individuals to take a proactive role in their health, highlighting the benefits of integrating multiple dimensions of wellness into their daily lives. The key here is 'proactive': the essence of healing is empowering yourself to take control of your well-being. So here's to holistic therapy day-every day!
