The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language defines anxiety as "A state of apprehension, uncertainty, and fear resulting from the anticipation of a realistic or fantasized threatening event or situation, often impairing physical and psychological functioning".
In a complex, busy world, it is easy to succumb to our worries and stresses. Anxiety is worrying about the future or regretting the past. Our fast-paced world has made it difficult for many to cope, resulting in varying degrees of stress and anxiety by keeping us in a fight/flight mode. This fight/flight served us well in life-threatening situations, but prolonged states lead to shallow breathing, a racing mind, panic, high blood pressure and illness.
Recognizing anxiety and then dealing with it can happen! The website for Anxiety Canada lists several informative articles and links to help people deal with this state affecting so many of us (Action Anxiety Day! | Anxiety Canada).
One of the best resources I have used for reducing anxiety is Emotional Freedom Technique, or tapping. It uses meridian points associated with acupuncture points on the head and upper chest/under arm to reduce stress.
