Don't bug me during summertime

Summer is just better with essential oils! Here's why!

Here in the National Capital Region, it's been a wet summer. Admittedly, we needed the rain, but not the mosquitoes that come with the pools of water around for these bugs to breed in. Did you know there are several essential oils that deter mosquitos effectively and more safely than commercial products which contain ingredients that can be harmful? You have probably heard of citronella as a natural repellant. That's because mosquitoes don't like the scent of lemon. Lemon-scented eucalyptus is another great one to have around, as well as lemongrass (also very good against ticks). If citrus is not your vibe, peppermint, patchouli, clove, catnip and lavender combinations can also be quite useful.

To make your own bug spray, combine any of the essential oils (maximum of 40 drops total) mentioned above in a sterile glass spritzer bottle with a teaspoon of vodka or vegetable glycerin. This will emulsify the essential oils and keep them dispersed throughout your spray. Shake well and top up with distilled water. Label (because even though your mixture is natural, people can still have sensitivities) and spray on clothing and skin (you can do a patch test on your inner elbow if you have sensitive skin to make sure you won't have a reaction).

Let's enjoy the sunny days while we have them!
