Every day is a new opportunity for self-care. World Mental Health Day is a reminder that our focus, especially in challenging times, is to maintain good mental health hygiene. What does that look like to you?

For me, keeping a strong mental core is paramount for good health overall-including physical health. We know that stress increases cortisol levels in the body, which lead to conditions like insomnia, weight gain and other health challenges.

Calming the mind through breath and meditation is one way to manage stress and anxiety. Exercise is another. Setting aside half an hour at the end of our work day (or whenever works) for a brisk walk can make a world of difference in the long run.

A healthy diet nourishes the body and gives it the fuel and replenishment it needs. Did you know that stress robs the body of many essential nutrients? By avoiding processed, fast foods, you can change the way you look and feel!

Stay in touch: humans are social creatures and we support each other. If you are feeling lonely, join a club, see what workshops are available in community centres or libraries, or reach out to friends. Journaling, doodling and/or art are excellent ways to get into a meditative flow, which can decrease blood pressure and bring you into a more relaxed state.
